Overview:
Nexus Media Importer allows you to import and stream music, video, photos and documents from a USB flash drive or SD card connected to your Nexus 7 & 10, Galaxy Nexus, Xoom or other Android 3.2+ devices with USB Host support. This is the only non-root solution for devices that do not provide native support for external flash storage. Requires the following hardware:

1) An Android 3.2+ device. Known compatible devices include Google Galaxy Nexus & Nexus 7 & 10 and the Motorola Xoom. Please try the free “Nexus Photo Viewer” first if you do not have one of these devices.
2) A USB OTG (On-The-Go) cable. Costs range from $1-5 USD on Amazon, see screenshots for examples.
3) A USB Flash Drive or USB SD Card Reader and SD Card, see screenshots for examples. Please see the FAQ on my website if you are trying to connect an external hard drive or other device.

To use:
-If you are using an SD card reader, put the card in the reader first.
-Attach the OTG cable to the Nexus or other device.
-Attach your USB device to the OTG cable.
-The application should launch automatically.
-Select the file. The selected file’s path appears in the preview window (currently only photos show preview).
-Click the play icon to stream or the save (disk) icon

Support:
-If you have an issue, please see my Website or contact me by clicking “Email Developer”.
-Currently, most USB Mass Storage devices work. Due to the mind boggling number of USB devices available it is not 100% If you contact me, I may be able to support your device in a future release. If you have doubts, try the free “Nexus Photo Viewer” first.
-I cannot reply to reviews/comments.

Technical Notes:

-DOES NOT REQUIRE ROOT!
-The Nexus 4 hardware does not support OTG/USB Host and can not be supported.
-The USB drive/flash card must be formatted as FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS (currently no exFAT or extN support). FAT & NTFS are the most common formats for SD and USB Drives.
-Read Only for NTFS.
-Hard Drives. It is strongly recommended that you use external power when connecting a hard drive to a tablet. Please see the troubleshooting guide on my web site for more information. Do not connect an unpowered hard drive to a phone!
-This a media streamer and file copy utility. It requires third party software to view multimedia content and read documents. Many formats are supported directly by Android, but other are not. In particular, “AVI” and most doc. types require additional software. There are many excellent free and paid apps. in the Play market. For example: ”BS Player”, “MX Player” and “Dice Player”

What’s next?
+Support for local media
+Support for multiple connections (via hub)
+Better support for Canon & Nikon raw types

INTERNET permission – This permission is required by Android to start the web server to stream video, etc. The server does not require WiFi or 3G connectivity to run, so it will work in airplane mode. The server is only accessible to the local device and cannot be seen on the internet or 3G network.

ACCESS_WIFI_STATE permission is required to get Wifi IP address for Advanced -> Expose Web Server

WAKE_LOCK permission is only used to prevent the tablet from sleeping while copying files.

This software is not produced by Google, which owns the Nexus trademark.
